Richmond’s seniors enjoy the longest life expectancy in Canada, their 85.7 years average being more than four years longer than the national norm.

And that fact can be attributed, at least in part, to a vibrant lifestyle that will be celebrated during B.C. Seniors Week June 5 to 11.

This year commemorating Canada’s 150th birthday, seniors are invited to share in engaging, fun and inspiring activities being offered throughout the city.

“Richmond seniors are vital contributors to the rich cultural and social fabric of our community” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The wide variety of activities and events offered through seniors week are essential to promoting healthy and active aging while fostering a caring, connected and engaged community.”

The City of Richmond and its partners are offering over 20 free or low-cost events, activities and programs over the seven days.

The week-long celebrations kick off on Monday, June 5 at 10 a.m. at the Gateway Theatre with the opening ceremony featuring notable Canadians and local performers, including musician/storyteller Rick Scott and comedian Mavis Pickett.

Other activities to enjoy throughout the week include a Japanese tea ceremony, Portraits of City Centre, Map Quest Travels, a seniors lunch with a Canadian themed sing-a-long, Oh Canada! A Musical Celebration, Memory Lane, and the Over 90s Tea and Celebration.

Wrap up the week in true Canadian fashion with buckwheat pancakes at the Canadian Breakfast, Eh on Sunday, June 11. Or learn about an important piece of Canadian history at The Journey of a Black Loyalist Family to Rural Nova Scotia.

In addition, a variety of fitness and dance classes are offered throughout the week so seniors can try something new.

Pre-registration is required for most activities as space is limited. Register online at www.richmond.ca/register, by calling 604-276-4300 Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or in person at any City of Richmond community facility. Transportation is available for some registered events for a nominal fee.

For a detailed list of all programs and activities, pick up a Seniors Week brochure from any Richmond community centre or visit www.richmond.ca/seniorsweek. Translated versions are available in Chinese and Punjabi at most community centres and online.
