After a two-day dip in new COVID-19 cases, BC recorded 834 in the last 24 hours.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said three of the new cases are epidemiologically linked. The new cases bring BC’s cumulative total to 34,728.

Of the new cases, 174 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 529 in the Fraser Health region, 20 in the Island Health region, 66 in the Interior Health region, and 45 in the Northern Health region.

There are 10,201 people under active public health monitoring, and 8,941 active cases—another increase in this number after yesterday marked the first decrease since mid-November. Of the active cases, 1,472 are associated with longterm care outbreaks, including 926 residents and 536 staff. Henry announced three new healthcare outbreaks: a longterm care home in New Westminster and two hospitals on Vancouver Island. She also declared several outbreaks over. There are now 61 outbreaks in the healthcare sector, 54 in longterm care or assisted living facilities and seven in acute care facilities.

Across BC, 337 people are hospitalized with COVID-19, including 79 in critical care. There have been 12 new virus-related deaths in the last 24 hours. Henry mentioned two new community outbreaks, both in the Fraser Health region.

She also reiterated that people should not travel unless it is essential for work or medical care, either within BC or between provinces.

“I’m asking in the strongest of terms for us to stay put, to stay in our communities and to protect our communities,” said Henry.

More detailed amended orders on events and gatherings will be posted today that reflect verbal orders made several weeks ago. More guidance for indoor fitness classes will be ready next week, and additional restrictions will also be put in place for adult indoor team sports.

BC’s current restrictions are in place until Monday, and Henry said her team is waiting until that day to decide whether or not orders will be extended, increased or decreased.
