BC Liberal interim leader Shirley Bond has named Richmond North Centre MLA Teresa Wat as the new opposition critic for Tourism, Arts and Culture. This comes as part of a wider announcement of new opposition critic roles, aimed at holding the NDP government to account and ensuring it addresses the critical issues facing British Columbians.

“I am honoured to take on the role. Every day in Richmond I see first-hand the struggles facing local tourism operators, and I know this is felt in every community in BC. We need action immediately to stave off the closure of hundreds of small businesses and the loss of thousands of jobs,” said Wat. “My role also encompasses anti-racism Initiatives. This is a file that is very important to me as I am also keen to contribute to the creation of museums and works recognizing the immense contributions of Chinese-Canadian, South Asian people and Japanese-Canadians to our province.”

“The pandemic has had a devastating impact on our tourism industry and this government has chosen to delay financial support and actively stall on providing the help needed to save BC businesses and livelihoods. That is unacceptable and I am eager to see Teresa push the NDP for action and answers on this file,” said Bond. “As the Official Opposition, we have a responsibility to make sure this government deals with the critical issues facing British Columbians. Our BC Liberal caucus is ready to get to work as we hold John Horgan and the NDP accountable to their promises and push for the bold actions needed during these unprecedented times.”
