The Vancouver chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) was forced to cancel the kick-off of its holiday awareness campaign planned for this morning (Wednesday) in Richmond.
The launch of Project Red Ribbon, promoting sober driving, was to be held in front of the Cambie fire hall. The event’s cancellation, however, doesn’t diminish the importance of the annual initiative.
Project Red Ribbon raises awareness about the risks of impaired driving during the holiday season and encourages motorists to always drive sober. MADD Metro Vancouver Chapter is asking everyone to show their commitment to sober driving by displaying a red ribbon or red ribbon car decal on their vehicles, key chains, purses, briefcases and backpacks.
Every year, hundreds of Canadians are killed and thousands are injured in crashes involving drivers with alcohol, cannabis and/or other drugs in their systems. MADD Canada Chapters and Community Leaders work to stop impaired driving and support victims of this violent crime.
Project Red Ribbon targets the Christmas and New Year holiday season because it is the busiest time of year on most social calendars. Even though the usual parties and celebrations may be limited this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the holiday season is still a busy time on our roads and still a time of high risk for impaired driving.
The red ribbon is a symbol of the importance of always driving sober. If you are going to be consuming alcohol, cannabis or other drugs, leave the car at home. Take an Uber or a taxi, take public transit, arrange a designated driver, or plan to spend the night. A few minutes spent planning a sober ride home could save lives and prevent injuries.
