Do you have an idea for a community project? Between now and April 18, you can apply for up to $500 to bring your idea to life.

The funding is offered through the Neighbourhood Small Grants program, which is operated locally by Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), in partnership with the Vancouver Foundation and Association of Neighbourhood Houses BC.

Each year, RCRG awards grants to Richmond residents, so they can organize community initiatives like cooking classes, urban gardens, and art exhibitions.

“The program aims to strengthen connections between neighbours,” says Jocelyn Wong, general manager of RCRG. “It’s about giving people the resources to build community in a creative and inclusive way.”

In 2023, three funding streams are available.

Residents can apply for a standard Neighbourhood Small Grant, designed for a wide range of projects that foster social connection and facilitate the sharing of skills, talents, and cultural practices.

Youth-Neighbourhood Small Grants have a similar focus, but are specifically for applicants between the ages of 12 and 24.

Finally, Richmond is participating in a pilot program called Lighter Living Neighbourhood Small Grants, which support initiatives that contribute to environmental sustainability and social wellbeing.

“The funding streams are meant as guides, and can help bring your ideas into focus,” says Wong. “Our advice is to start with something you’re passionate about – a skill, a hobby, an interest. That can be the foundation of a really amazing project.”
