Kim Young, a longtime Kajaks coach and lifelong athletics supporter, has passed away.

A teacher, Young began his coaching career with the Richmond Kajaks in 1965. He was one of the founders of the B.C. Elementary Track and Field Championships, which began in 1968. Young was also Team Canada Coach at the 1979 and 1982 Pan Pacific Games.

Young coached athletes ranging from beginners to Olympians alike, and was inducted into the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame as a coach in 2008. He served as director of Athletics Canada, president of BC Athletics, and chair of the longest continuous international meet in Canada—the Harry Jerome Classic.

“Kim Young has made a lifelong endeavour to improve the opportunities for Canadian youth through his devotion to his calling in education as a teacher, administrator, and coach,” said his colleague, 1952 Olympian and fellow B.C. Sports Hall of Famer Doug Clement. “The track and field movement in Canada has lost an individual whose  lifelong contribution cannot be matched.”
