Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) is taking advantage of the new year to re-introduce its programs and how people can get involved, beginning with seniors community support services.
For older adults who have challenges getting out on their own, RCRG provides a grocery shopping service, where volunteers fill orders placed over the phone and deliver them directly to each client's home.
Working in partnership with the United Way, RCRG also runs the Richmond Better at Home program, which includes transportation, friendly visiting, and light housekeeping services.
As part of the senior peer counselling service, trained volunteers—all older adults themselves—meet with clients one-on-one. These informal sessions provide a safe, judgement-free space where seniors can receive emotional support from someone who's had similar life experiences.
Sometimes, older adults need help accessing services not offered by RCRG. That's where Seniors Community Connections comes in. Knowledgeable volunteers meet with seniors and their families to provide information on everything from housing to healthcare to government benefits. Volunteers can also help clients complete government forms and file basic tax returns.
The newest addition to RCRG’s seniors community support services is the Richmond Family & Friend Caregiver Hub, presented by TD Bank. Through the hub, anyone who provides unpaid care to an older adult living in Richmond can access resources, support, and a wide range of educational and recreational workshops.
Many of RCRG’s seniors community support services are entirely free. For others, the fee is on a sliding scale, based on a client's income. All services are offered in multiple languages.
People can register for services or get more information online, by calling 604-279-7020, or by emailing info@rcrg.org.
RCRG relies on a dedicated team of volunteers to deliver seniors community support services. Volunteers serve as grocery shoppers, friendly visitors, senior peer counsellors, information and referral assistants, and more. Active postings can be found on RCRG’s website.
The organization is always seeking volunteer drivers to bring seniors to medical appointments and to deliver groceries. People can apply online.
