Earlier this week, Mayor Malcolm Brodie endorsed eight candidates for city councillor in the upcoming municipal election.

“People have asked me as an independent candidate for mayor, who would be the best choices to sit on city council for the next four years,” said Brodie. “Now—having had the chance to see the candidates in this campaign at all-candidate meetings—I’m pleased to endorse those who would make Richmond an even better place for all during the next four years.”

Brodie’s endorsements include existing councillors Chak Au, Andy Hobbs, Alexa Loo, and Bill McNulty, along with council hopefuls Rahim Othman, Sheldon Starrett, Eric Yung, and Melissa Zhang. The candidates represent three slates: RCCA—Richmond Community Coalition, Richmond United, and ONE Richmond.

“The City of Richmond, like all communities, will face new and critical challenges for the next four-year term,” said Brodie. “Fortunately, thanks to the past and current council and management, the city also has some key opportunities going forward.”

Brodie said his priority areas include affordable housing for families and seniors, increased community safety, local actions to combat climate change, and overall community livability.

“These candidates all come from various political groups and have different perspectives. They are all passionate about Richmond and know the importance of good governance in order to enhance our high quality of life,” said Brodie.

Elected to Richmond city council in 1996, Brodie has been the city’s mayor since 2001. He is the longest-serving mayor in Richmond’s history.
