The Richmond Board of Education and its stakeholders have released a joint statement in support of the district’s SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) policy.

The statement is a partnership between board chair Sandra Nixon, Richmond Teachers’ Association president Liz Baverstock, CUPE Local 716 president Ian Hillman, Richmond Association of School Administrators president Mike Murray, Richmond District Parents Association president Andrew Scallion, and Richmond Management and Professional Staff chair Kelly Gibson.

The Richmond board and stakeholders re-affirmed the district’s commitment, as stated in Board Policy 106, “to ensure that every individual is treated with fairness, respect and dignity … and to encourage a climate of welcome, respect, and support for those who identify as LGBTQ+ and the challenges they often encounter in being accepted and fully included in the life of the school community."

According to the joint statement, the district’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Policy, Regulations, and Guidelines aim to ensure Richmond schools provide supportive and respectful learning environments. The policy was adopted in 2018. The board is also committed to the ongoing work of the district SOGI Advisory Committee.

“The Richmond Board of Education and its stakeholder groups firmly believe that Richmond students, staff, and families deserve to feel safe and accepted for who they are and deserve to learn and work in an environment free of discrimination,” the statement says.

Recently, B.C.’s Minister of Education and Child Care and the ministry’s K-12 education partners made a similar statement in support of SOGI.
