May is celebrated annually in B.C. as Child Care Month, and the City of Richmond is joining in on the celebration.

Two events are being hosted, a symposium and an art exhibit, to recognize the important work of those who care for and nurture the well-being of children in the city’s growing, inclusive community.

“Child Care Month provides an opportunity to celebrate the dedication and commitment that early childhood educators and child care providers demonstrate each day in our community.” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “More than ever, the pandemic has emphasized the importance of child care as an essential service and the City of Richmond is committed to working in partnership with child care stakeholders to ensure the needs of Richmond families and children are addressed.”

The Richmond Child Care Development Advisory Committee, in collaboration with the Richmond Public Library and Richmond Child Care Resource and Referral—a program of Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives—are hosting two events for Child Care Month. Both are open to the public.

Supporting Richmond’s Children: A Symposium for Early Childhood Educators, Child Care Providers, and Parents will take place on Saturday (May 7) from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will feature three presentations:

• The current state of Richmond’s children

• Increasing resilience for child care providers

• Nurturing and responsive relationships

A children’s art exhibition featuring original creations from local child care programs will be on display in the Community Art Space at the Richmond Public Library’s Brighouse branch from today through May 22.
