This week is Education Week in the Richmond School District, and celebrations again take on a a virtual format.

Board chair Sandra Nixon says while initially the format switched due to the pandemic, it allows a greater opportunity for engagement through the district’s website and social media platforms.

“The online format also provides more opportunities for our schools to showcase all the wonderful classroom learning, projects, and school/student initiatives from across the district,” says Nixon.

Last year the district’s Education Week platform highlighted 26 “school stories,” and this year almost double that number were submitted.

The main theme is connection, with each day focused on a specific sub-category:

• Monday—connecting to place

• Tuesday—belonging: diversity, equity, and inclusion

• Wednesday—exploring healthy living and well-being

• Thursday—learning together

• Friday—sharing our gifts

Nixon says the theme is fitting this year, given the need for “strengthening and keeping connections between us all at this time, and the important connection that school has been for students and families during the pandemic.”

Teachers, schools, and classrooms are asked to submit examples and stories for each day’s theme. Students also shared their thoughts at a meeting with board members on Monday, and will have another opportunity to speak with trustees next month when the new Student Voice Working Group gathers.

“Encouraging and amplifying student voice is one of the key priorities identified by the board in its new strategic plan,” says Nixon. “Education Week also provides an opportunity for the board to be accountable to our community, highlighting how the learning happening in our classrooms and schools is aligned with and supporting the goals embedded within our strategic plan priorities—inspired learners, equity and inclusion, and a connected learning community.”

Nixon encourages people to look at the district’s website (https://sd38.bc.ca/) and read this week’s featured school stories. She says it is inspiring to see educators’ and students’ passion and creativity and the sense of community in Richmond public schools.

“It always leaves me with an incredible feeling of hope for our future,” she adds.
