Nineteen more COVID-19 deaths bring week’s count to 78

B.C. health officials reported 19 new deaths related to COVID-19 today, bringing the week-long total to 78. Last week’s total was 68.

Of those who died in the last 24 hours, six lived in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, five in the Fraser Health region, six in the Island Health region and two in the Northern Health region. Since the pandemic began, the province has recorded 2,675 COVID-related deaths.

Health officials also reported 1,799 new cases of COVID-19 today. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 330,942 cases.

The numbers of total and new cases are provisional due to a delayed data refresh and will be verified once confirmed, according to a B.C. government news release.

Of the new cases, 294 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 551 in the Fraser Health region, 232 in the Island Health region, 531 in the Interior Health region, 191 in the Northern Health region, and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 25,479 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 946 COVID-positive individuals are in hospital, 139 of whom are in intensive care. 

To date, 10,872,777 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,199,246 of those are second doses and 2,229,462 are third doses. 

This means that 93.2 per cent of adults, 92.8 per cent of people aged 12 and older, and 90 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 90.6 per cent of adults, 90.2 per cent of those aged 12 and older, and 84.2 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses; 51.5 per cent of adults and 48.1 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.

Health authorities reported three new health-care facility outbreaks and declared one over. Active outbreaks continue at 47 long-term care facilities, four assisted or independent living facilities, and seven acute care facilities.

From Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 24.9 per cent of cases and from Jan. 20 to Feb. 2 they accounted for 31.2 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Not vaccinated: 339 (26.3 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 63 (4.9 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 887 (68.8 per cent)

• Not vaccinated: 411.7

• Partially vaccinated: 162.6

• Fully vaccinated: 234.8

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Jan. 20 to Feb. 2)

• Not vaccinated: 88.2

• Partially vaccinated: 49.6

• Fully vaccinated: 19.0
