For the first time, B.C. is reporting that more than 1,000 people are in hospital with an active case of COVID-19.

As of today, 1,048 COVID-positive individuals are in hospital, 138 of whom are in intensive care. In all, there are 27,454 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C.

The province began reporting hospitalization figures using census data on Jan. 14. At that time, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said about 45 per cent of the total number is made up of incidental discoveries—people who test positive during their screening tests at admission—whereas about 50 per cent are admitted to hospital because of their COVID diagnosis.

Health officials also reported 4,075 new cases of COVID-19 since Friday. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 324,615 cases.

Of the new cases, 645 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 1,225 in the Fraser Health region, 575 in the Island Health region, 1,182 in the Interior Health region, 447 in the Northern Health region and one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada.

To date, 10,748,814 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,184,629 of those are second doses and 2,125,735 are third doses.

This means that 93.1 per cent of adults, 92.7 per cent of people aged 12 and older and 89.9 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 90.5 per cent of adults, 90.1 per cent of those aged 12 and older and 84 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses; 49.1 per cent of adults and 45.9 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.

Sadly, there were 19 new virus-related deaths reported since Friday, bringing that total to 2,616. Of those who died, six lived in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, two in the Fraser Health region, three in the Island Health region and eight in the Interior Health region.

Health authorities reported eight new health-care facility outbreaks and declared eight over. Active outbreaks continue at 47 long-term care facilities, three assisted or independent living facilities and eight acute care facilities.

From Jan. 21 to 27, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 26 per cent of cases and from Jan. 14 to 27, they accounted for 30.6 per cent of hospitalizations.
