People travelling on the Canada Line in Richmond can expect several weeks of service changes due to construction of the new Capstan station.

TransLink vice-president of engineering Jeffrey Busby discussed the transit disruption at Wednesday’s general purposes committee meeting. The construction of foundation piles will begin on Monday (Jan. 10) and run through Feb. 2, Busby said.

During that construction, all trains will run between Waterfront station and Vancouver International Airport (YVR), operating every four minutes and eight seconds. This is an increase in frequency from the normal schedule of six minutes and 40 seconds between trains.

Meanwhile, trains on the so-called “Richmond branch” will operate on a shuttle system that goes back and forth every 17 and a half minutes between Bridgeport and Richmond-Brighouse stations. These trains also normally operate every six minutes and 40 seconds.

Construction will happen on weekdays from the start of service to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from the start of service to 8 p.m. There will be no construction or transit disruption on Sundays.

Supplementary bus service will be in place to help support customer demand. The buses will operate every five to seven minutes from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and every five to 10 minutes on Saturdays, as needed. They will not stop at Aberdeen or Lansdowne stations.
