Another 20 COVID-related deaths reported in B.C.

With 20 additional COVID-related deaths reported in B.C. since Friday, October is on track to be the third-deadliest month since the pandemic began.

The most deaths happened in December 2020 when 460 people lost their lives, an average of 14.84 per day. January 2021 was the second-highest, with 306 deaths (9.87 per day).

So far, 167 people have died in the province since Oct. 1, an average of 6.68 per day. In comparison, there were 146 deaths in September (4.87 per day).

Of the 20 people who died over the weekend, three lived in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, four in the Fraser Health region, three in the Island Health region, six in the Interior Health region and four in the Northern Health region.

Health officials also reported 1,618 new cases of COVID-19 since Friday, 21 of which are epidemiologically linked. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 202,516 cases.

Of the new cases, 190 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 699 in the Fraser Health region, 186 in the Island Health region, 254 in the Interior Health region, 289 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 4,966 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 366 of those people are hospitalized, 149 of whom are in intensive care. 

To date, 8,156,567 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,910,536 of those are second doses. 

This means that 90.0 per cent of adults and 89.6 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 85.0 per cent of adults and 84.4 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.

Health authorities reported five new healthcare facility outbreaks and declared one over. Active outbreaks continue at 17 long-term care facilities, seven assisted or independent living facilities and five acute care facilities.

The current number of active healthcare outbreaks, 29, is the highest since early February.
