The driver of a white Nissan Juke barrelled past two yellow barriers and three security guards posted at the Minoru Gate exit of the Richmond World Festival Friday night and then struck a cyclist while attempting a u-turn.

The driver was detained at the scene by security guards and Richmond RCMP are now investigating.

The cyclist, a senior citizen, was unhurt, but his bicycle sustained minor damage.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m. when the Nissan turned into the section of road that’s barred to most traffic, weaving past the two barriers and narrowly missing the three security guards posted at the exit.

As one of the security guards gave chase, and waved his flashlight at the driver, the vehicle continued down north on Minoru Gate toward Richmond Arenas and then suddenly attempted a u-turn.

At that point a cyclist was heading south on Minoru Gate and was struck by the Nissan, which then stopped.

A witness at the scene claimed to have seen the driver using his cell phone at the time of the incident.

The driver had his cellular phone taken from him by security guards, and voiced his displeasure. He was physically restrained by what appeared to be security guards.

“Give me my phone back, dude. I need to call my lawyer.”

The Richmond Sentinel spoke to the cyclist, who had a smile on his face and said he was unhurt.
