A decade ago, the Richmond Arts Awards
debuted to recognize community excellence in six disciplines: visual,
performing, literary, culinary, environmental and new media.
Three finalists were named in each category
in April for the 2018 awards, with the winners announced at a special civic
ceremony Tuesday hosted by Mayor Malcolm Brodie.
A selection panel that included playwright,
actor and stage manager Andrew Wade, Lansdowne Mall marketing manager Bronwyn
Bailey, contemporary visual artist Jeanette Jarville and Richmond Arts
Coalition board member Susan Skemp reviewed 86 nominations before selecting the
following award recipients for this year’s awards:
•Ted Hesketh—Arts Education Award, presented
to an individual or organization whose achievements and contributions to arts
education have been within their arts discipline or bringing a new cultural
experience to Richmond;
•Kerri-Joe Stewart—Artistic Innovation Award,
presented to an individual artist or organization producing visionary, creative
work, exhibiting innovation within their arts discipline or bringing a new
cultural experience to Richmond;
•Ampri Real Estate Development Group—Business
and Arts Award, presented to a business that has made a significant
contribution to the arts in Richmond by supporting a Richmond-based artist or
arts organization through sponsorship, philanthropic and/or volunteer service;
•Dale Bailey—Volunteerism Award, presented to
an individual who has made a significant contribution to the arts in Richmond
by supporting a Richmond-based artist or arts organization through volunteer
service;
•Emily May—Youth Arts Award, honouring
Richmond’s young artists, musicians and cultural contributors; and
•Marina Szijarto—Cultural Leadership Award,
recognizing an arts professional or organization as a leader in their arts
discipline, as well as their organization stewardship and contribution to
Richmond’s cultural development.
Recognizing achievements and contributions to
the arts by Richmond residents, artists, educators, organizers and business
leaders, the Richmond Arts Awards program has, to date, attracted more than 180
nominations while recognizing well-established institutions and rising stars in
the arts community.
