A collaborative art wall will be unveiled at Richmond Public Library’s Brighouse branch on Saturday. And it’s hoped that the permanent display space, created for community members to share original art, will provoke reflection and thoughtful discussion, as well as creating a positive and inviting atmosphere.

Both Richmond-based organizations and individual community members are welcome to submit their art for consideration. Selected artwork will be displayed for eight weeks at a time.

The new art wall will be situated in the computer lab on the second floor of the Minoru Park branch. The changing community art features will ensure that the space will be refreshed, and will inspire visitors who are spending time there.

The first art wall installation will feature work by local artist Jean Bradbury and Richmond Multicultural Community Services members called Stories of Home—Past and Present and is presented in partnership with Public Art Richmond. To kick off the launch of this installation, Richmond Multicultural Community Services, Public Art Richmond and the library will present a community event Saturday (Nov. 6) from 2 to 3 p.m. There will be small storytelling circles, time for reflection and informal conversations about home, and how it connects people to their culture and community. “Art is an equitable way to bring people together and spark conversation,” said Shane Parmar, coordinator of community development and service design. “The new Community Art Wall at Richmond Public Library is a place where people from different ages, demographics and circumstances can come together to connect, share their stories and talk about their shared and unique experiences.”
