Gateway Theatre has a new project aimed at engaging craft enthusiasts and storytellers.

The family friendly Hallows’ Eve paper theatre kit, available online starting today, was illustrated by local artist Keely O’Brien. It arrives ready to assemble and users can create a miniature 3D theatre and stage a play from their own home.

“I hope everyone who orders Hallows’ Eve will find as much delight in assembling and playing with the theatre as I did in making it, and that you will let your own imagination and creativity shine as you build and activate this enchanted little world,” says O’Brien.

Gateway’s kit pays homage to the original paper theatres, sold at playhouse concession stands in 19th century Europe. It also comes with a Halloween-themed play written by Gateway artistic and community producer Jasmine Chen.

“While we’re waiting to return to our beloved theatre venues and artistic spaces, I wanted to capture the feeling of escaping into another world, which is my favourite part of experiencing theatre,” says Chen. “Although digital performances are exciting, we wanted to turn the focus back on the infinite possibilities of one’s own creativity.”

Each kit includes artwork printed on card stock, the script for the play, and assembly instructions in English and Chinese. Users need scissors and glue to put together their kit, and there will be a “how-to” video posted on Gateway’s website.
