With the impending departure of Jovanni Sy, Gateway Theatre announces the appointment of Barbara Tomasic as interim producer.

Sy, the current artistic director, has given the Gateway board ample notice of his choice to leave his current position to concentrate more on his independent career.

Tomasic begins early February 2019 to dovetail with Sy’s departure mid-February 2019. Sy has grown Gateway’s success, with one show’s run selling out last year by opening night.

According to Gateway’s statement delivered today, “Barbara Tomasic is an accomplished theatre performer, director and teacher who has a long history with Gateway in a number of professional capacities.”

Tomasic is not new to Richmond audiences. She was the Artistic Associate at Gateway from 2004-2007. She is currently co-artistic director at Musical Theatreworks.

Anyone who enjoyed The Music Man at Gateway in December of 2016 can attest to her directorial chops. Tomasic’s latest gig as a director was a record-breaker at the helm of Chemainus Theatre’s summer run of the musical Grease.

Tomasic’s responsibilities will include overseeing the plays chosen for next year’s season while Gateway takes the time to work with New York consultancy Emc Arts to determine their needs and to plan for the future.

After the consultative and planning phase, Gateway says they expect to begin a search for permanent new artistic leadership in early 2019.
