There are currently no reported cases of COVID-19 being spread through food, according to food safety authorities worldwide. But you can still adopt safe food handling and cooking practices to lower your risk of infection and kill the virus that causes COVID-19.
Safe food practices include the use of common cleaning and disinfection methods, washing hands frequently with soap and water, or using hand sanitizer if running water is not available.
Safe food practices also include the following:
• Wash your fruits and vegetables under running water—but avoid using soap, chlorine or other chemicals as they could be absorbed into the porous produce
• Cook your food to recommended safe internal temperatures
• Avoid cross-contamination of raw and ready-to-eat or cooked foods
• Disinfect any surfaces that will come in contact with food
Follow these precautions to stay safe while at the grocery store and after arriving home:
• Use hand sanitizer at the entrance of the store, if available
• Bring your own clean reusable grocery bags, if permitted, or use bags provided at the store
• Keep a two metre distance from other people while shopping
• Avoid touching items you are not going to buy
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
• Use hand sanitizer when exiting the store, if available
• Wash your hands when you arrive home
• Put away groceries, especially items that require refrigeration
• Wash your hands after handling food and packaging
• Use proper food handling and cooking practices
If you have food delivered to your home, use contactless payment and delivery wherever possible. Keep a distance of at least two metres from the delivery person and wash your hands after handling food and packaging.
