Children and parents looking for fun and enriching programs during Spring Break have over 20 options at the Richmond Public Library. These free programs run the gamut from science to crochet, from computer coding to nature programs.

In the Richmond School District, most schools will be closed for two weeks starting Monday March 16. Students return to school on Monday March 30.

“We’re very excited to offer a wide range of programs for children of all ages. This year, we’re offering a number of author events and writing workshops,” says marketing coordinator Stephanie Vokey.

For these Spring Break activities, the library is partnering with a host of other organizations such as

Parks Canada, Let’s Talk Science, Knit N Crochet 4 A Better World, Eye Level Learning Centre, and Under the GUI.

For those curious about learning how to write like a published author, this year’s programs include writing workshops for children by local author Julia Nobel, and author/illustrator team Amy Takeda and Dawn Lo.

Teens can practice their creative writing skills with author Eileen Cook and learn how to become published authors with editor Fernanda Viveiros.

“It is so important for literacy programs to be accessible within the community,” says author Amy Takeda. “We see the children in our writing programs thrive in a creative setting and their confidence grows in tandem with their writing skills."

For those looking to build their technology skills, there are also many robotics and coding programs available that are ideal for youth ages 7 to 13.

RPL offers more than just organized activities. Library spaces are open for reading and borrowing, independent study, or socializing with friends.

For a full listing of all program information, including recommended ages, branch locations and program times, check out the program guide: rpl.yourlibrary.ca/sites/default/files/pdf/spring20_proguide.pdf

While some activities are drop-in, many require registration in advance and can fill up fast. Registration is now open.

The Richmond Public Library website has more registration details: rpl.yourlibrary.ca/. Vokey recommends registering as soon as possible, since most programs will reach capacity.
