CUPE, city reach four-year agreement

—
The City of Richmond’s inside and outside workers, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), have signed a four-year agreement that runs from Jan. 1, 2020 to Dec. 31, 2023.
With 700,000 members CUPE is Canada’s largest union. Across the country, CUPE represents workers in many fields such as health care, emergency services, education, early learning and child care, municipalities, social services, libraries, utilities, transportation, and airlines.
Locals 718 and 394 cover the Richmond civic employees. While the two CUPE locals voted and ratified the agreement in February, it is effective retroactively to the start of this year.
The new agreement guarantees wage increases of 9.25 per cent over four years, broken down as a 2.00 per cent increase this year then 2.25 per cent increase next year and 2.50 per cent increases for each of the third and fourth year of the agreement.
The new collective agreement offers more than simply wage increases. There will also be enhanced health benefits, training, and structures for taking leave from work.
"(These benefits) will strengthen the workforce, improve recruitment and retention, and create efficiencies across our municipality," says city spokesperson Clay Adams.
