Plans are already afoot for the 2018 Steveston Icebreaker Walk/Run.

Hosted and organized by the Richmond Kajaks Track and Field Club, the eight-kilometre event Sunday, Jan. 21 has become an annual tradition to help welcome in the new year. And the fun, flat and fast course is just the tonic for that cookie and eggnog hangover.

Race director Jared Hulme is particularly stoked about the new additions that are sure to make the 2018 Icebreaker the best yet. That starts with the fact the New Balance store in Richmond has come aboard as a major sponsor, along with the Running Room.

“There are many other new and fabulous community sponsors, and more food if you can believe it,” said Hulme. “We’ll also have the large gymnasium for the pre- and post-race festivities, and we’re holding our first-ever expo featuring local school and community groups.”

The Run Expo in the Steveston Community Centre from 9 a.m. to noon is free to the public and will feature exhibitors and major athletic brands and tips on active lifestyle and sports performance.

The race itself, set to start at 9 a.m. at the Imperial Landing site, will also double as the BC Athletics 8K Championships, which be divided into five-year increments and medals awarded to the top three finishers in each age category. But Hulme explains that it is still open for families and children.

“It’s a community run for all,” he stresses.

The Icebreaker, which will be replete with a new logo and t-shirts, will be the first in the Lifestages Lower Mainland Road Race Series and second of the BC Super Series in 2018.

There’s still time to become a sponsor and/or part of the expo, or to volunteer, by e-mailing Hulme at kajaksroadrace@gmail.com. The McMath Secondary School leadership class is an active group that has come out each year, and also helped set up for their free run they hold in the spring, Hulme says.
