Ice, snow give commuters headaches

It’s been a rough couple of weather days in Richmond.
After a dusting of snow on Wednesday, freezing weather set in after dinner, creating skating-rink like conditions all over the city.
According to Richmond Mounties, there were 22 collisions in the 24-hour period ending Thursday at 7 a.m., one involving an officer whose police vehicle was rear-ended while at the scene of a collision.
Officers found themselves in hazardous conditions Wednesday night, RCMP Cpl. Dennis Hwang said.
According to the City of Richmond, a “sudden drop in temperature that occurred within 40 minutes in the evening which was not forecast.”
City staff who were monitoring conditions called in six trucks and three brine trucks at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
“Five more were called in at 8 p.m. as conditions were not changing,” city spokesperson Linea Volkering said.
On Friday morning, the snow began to come down, with a few centimetres accumulating on the sidewalks by mid-afternoon. Up to 20 centimetres was in the forecast for the day.
