Richmond audiences can expect a treat, usually reserved for televised concerts in England where skilled performers give concerts of songs from famous musicals.

From Thursday, April 26 to Saturday, April 28, four performances of From Broadway with Love at Richmond’s Gateway Theatre will offer lovers of musical theatre an opportunity to hear their favourite songs in concert.

Circle Bright Productions offers an evening with a live orchestra, choir and soloists who perform songs from classics such as West Side Story, Les Miserables and A Chorus Line as well as more recent Broadway hits including The Book of Mormon, Legally Blonde and Dear Evan Hansen.

While these haunting and powerful songs have entered our popular culture as entertainment, many have their roots in human rights, marking injustice, and spurring social change.

Les Miserables, Victor Hugo’s magnum opus, quickly led to legislated changes in its day.

West Side Story, a 20th century interpretation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, shone a light on conflict between the youth from different immigrant groups.

Even Hairspray, often thought of as trite, has at its roots in the fight for human rights in a racially divided America.

Rent explores the need for compassion for LGBTQ people, particularly those living with HIV in the early days of the AIDS epidemic.
