Everyone deserves a place to call home.
Recognizing this, BC Housing and the City of
Richmond have joined forces in an ongoing effort to address local affordable
housing needs.
A community information session will be held
Thursday, May 10 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Richmond City Hall, 6911 No. 3 Rd.
for the 40 new rental homes, with 24-hour, seven-day-a-week support services,
proposed at 7300 Elmbridge Way. The three-storey modular housing building will
address the immediate needs of vulnerable people in the community struggling to
find a stable place to live.
Since the proposed supportive rental home project
was introduced in February 2018, the city has received public feedback with a
variety of perspectives. The city has engaged through a survey on LetsTalkRichmond.ca, one-on-one meetings
with key stakeholders, a community information meeting this past Feb. 28, and
nine facilitated community forums in April.
While not a public hearing (there will be no
voting or opportunity to delegate to council), the May 10 information session
will provide an additional opportunity for community members to learn more
about homelessness in Richmond and the proposed supportive housing on Elmbridge
Way. The session will be a drop-in style meeting with information boards. Staff
from the City of Richmond, BC Housing, and RainCity Housing will be in
attendance to answer any questions. To meet expressed needs of the community,
interpreters for Mandarin and Cantonese will be also be available to assist
with conversations, and the information boards will be translated into Chinese.
Residents will have an opportunity to
delegate at a council meeting at a later date, before a decision regarding the
proposal is made. This opportunity will be advertised.
Anyone that is not able to attend is
encouraged to review proposal materials on the City’s website.
Richmond introduced an Affordable Housing
Strategy in March 2018. The proposed housing on Elmbridge Way will provide
homes to vulnerable populations, including persons with mental health and
addiction issues.
