Cambie hosting public meeting on rabbits

Richmond’s abandoned pet rabbit population will be one of the topics of a community meeting next week at Cambie Community Centre.
Members of the Rabbitats Rescue Society will be hosting the meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23 to address the thousands of pet rabbits and their offspring that are in almost every neighbourhood in Richmond and moving into new areas nearly every day.
According to the society, the abandoned pet rabbit population is gaining strong footholds in Burnaby, Surrey, Delta, Langley, MIssion and Chilliwack too.
Among the topics being discussed are the reasons for the rabbit population, the laws and responsibilities of pet owners, and will suggest solutions.
Tips on rabbit-proofing gardens and flower beds will also be provided, along with an update on the Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus and its impact on the pet rabbit population.
According to the society, the feral rabbits are everywhere and are damaging public and private property and causing trauma to people who either run them over, find their bodies or watch as predators snatch them up.
