The COVID-19 pandemic has produced significant health and economic challenges. If there's a silver lining, though, it's the way our community has responded. There's been an outpouring of kindness and generosity, perhaps best exemplified by the many people who have stepped up to volunteer.
Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives has seen it at its own organization, with dozens of new volunteers signing up as delivery drivers and virtual visitors to support its Safe Seniors, Strong Communities initiative. The same thing has happened throughout Richmond's charitable sector, as community members mobilize to give back and do good in any way they can.
Like everyone, RCRG wants COVID-19 to be over as soon as possible, but hopes that the volunteer spirit ignited by the pandemic continues to burn bright as life returns to normal. Or at least, the new normal.
In recent weeks, RCRG has been encouraged by several new volunteer opportunities that have been added to their database.
• The Community Arts Council of Richmond is recruiting for a new board member—ideally someone with grant writing experience. It's an excellent chance to contribute to Richmond's diverse and vibrant arts scene.
• The BC Aviation Council, is seeking a website content manager. It's a virtual role, so you can do it from home. Check it out if you have a passion for planes, or would simply like to enhance your web development skills.
• Vancouver Coastal Health runs a youth-focused program called BLUSH: Bold Learning for Understanding Sexual Health. In the program, youth educators between the ages of 17 and 23 present workshops to high school students, covering topics like healthy relationships, sexualized media, and sexual health and wellness. VCH hopes to have BLUSH up and running again in September, and is recruiting volunteers to facilitate workshops.
RCRG is seeking applicants for its 2020-21 Leadership Richmond - Youth Now program.
