Richmond’s farming heritage is being celebrated Saturday on the Garden City Lands.

The second annual Farm Fest will allow residents to meet local formers, learn about farming equipment and check out artisan goods from throughout the Lower Mainland.

The free community event, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will feature more than 40 vendors, many of which have harvested their crops directly from local soil. You’ll also be able to climb aboard a 1916 steam tractor from the Savage Farm, take photos of ploughing equipment and interact with other historic and contemporary farm machines and displays.

You’ll also want to check out Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s interactive farming operation on the Garden City Lands. Farmers in the program will be on site to provide interactive weeding strategies and tractor and ploughing demonstrations. Visitors will also be able to view a temporary chicken coop housing live chickens.

Kwantlen’s Department of Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems is working with the City of Richmond to develop a Teaching and Research Farm on eight hectares of the site. The farm highlights diversified, sustainable, regenerative, and organic production practices adjacent to downtown Richmond. The students are studying and practicing at the Garden City Lands while working toward their Bachelor of Applied Science in Sustainable Agriculture.

The festival will also feature live entertainment, community displays and a children’s play area.

A city-owned park that is currently being developed as one of Richmond’s signature parks, the Garden City Lands is home to active farming and agriculture programs, a dedicated natural area and a perimeter trail for cyclists and pedestrians.

There is no onsite parking, but will be available at Lansdowne Centre (5300 No. 3 Rd.) and the Col. Sherman Armory (5500 No. 4 Rd.). A shuttle bus service will run to and from these locations continuously from 9:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A bike valet service will also be available.

Farm Fest is a presentation of the City of Richmond, with TD Bank Group sponsoring the Community Stage and Kwantlen Polytechnic University sponsoring the marketplace. Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market and Kwantlen Street Farmers Market are community partners.
