UPDATE: Three grenades prompt RCMP station evacuation

The person who brought in three hand grenades to the Steveston Community Police Station late Thursday afternoon, had the right intention.
But Richmond RCMP Cpl. Dennis Hwang said anybody that discovers potentially-live explosives, such as dynamite or blasting caps or in this case hand grenades, should call 911 rather than risk moving the items.
"Call first. We will come to them," Hwang told The Richmond Sentinel.
After the Lower Mainland Explosives Disposal Unit arrived, they determined that the grenades were not live, Hwang said.
Hwang said investigators believe there was no malicious intent, just confusion. The person who brought in the grenades remained at the scene, while the issue was dealt with by investigators and the area cordoned off and a safety perimeter created.
Discoveries of this kind can happen when a person passes away, and family is left to clean up their home. He said RCMP always err on the side of caution, and urge people who discover something that looks potentially deadly, to call them.
The Steveston Community Police Station is on Moncton Street and across the parking lot from the Steveston Community Centre and the Steveston Martial Arts Centre.
