A thief may have bitten off more than he or she can chew, something that’s much more hazardous than it appears.

That’s according to Richmond Mounties, who on Tuesday afternoon reported a theft from a work site that occurred hours earlier Tuesday on the 8100 block of Westminster Highway.

Structures at the site were scheduled for demolition, and industrial equipment was brought in to assist in the process, including a OmniAire 2000C, a machine used to remove asbestos. Other equipment was also reported as stolen to police, who arrived around 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Police are asking the public to avoid contact with the machine without proper safety equipment. Asbestos particles can be harmful if inhaled or handled.

Anyone with information about the stolen device is asked to call the Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212.
