The Steveston Festival of Trees at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site is on through Christmas Eve (Dec. 24).
Annually, Christmas trees decorated by community groups and local merchants are displayed at the cannery for people to view.
“We are encouraging all visitors and community members to take part in a friendly competition by voting for their favourite tree,” says Diana Smith, the cannery’s marketing and communications coordinator.
People can vote onsite or click “like” on their favourite tree’s photo in the cannery’s Facebook album. Voting is open through Dec. 22, with the winning three to be announced on Dec. 23.
The tradition of a Christmas tree started in the 16th century in Germany, when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther is believed to have been the first person to add candles to a tree.
The first Christmas tree displayed in America was put up by German settlers in Pennsylvania in 1816.
In modern times, Christmas trees are on display all around the world. Richmond’s McArthur Glen outlet mall has a 16-foot tree, along with other local displays.
The cannery is open during its regular hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and regular admission for entry applies. Adults pay $12.50, seniors (age 65-plus) pay $10.75, while society members and youth (age 17 and under) can enter for free.
