City inviting expressions of interest in Smart Cities vision

Looking to the future, Richmond is inviting
vendors, contractors and services to step forward to share in its Smart Cities
initiative.
A finalist for one of two $10 million prizes
in the national competition created by Infrastructure Canada, designed to
encourage communities to adopt a smart cities approach to improve the lives of
residents through innovation, data and connected technology, Richmond proposes
to create an Intelligent Operations Hub that will seamlessly integrate data and
co-ordinate emergency response, while enhancing day-to-day delivery of key
local services. The hub will enable improved communications and data sharing
that will drive critical decision making for both service delivery and
emergency response.
In addition, the city’s proposal in the Smart
Cities Challenge includes initiatives to improve traffic management, reduce
collisions and congestion and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Other
expected benefits include real-time incident notifications, faster response
times, safer streets, greater community resiliency, early incident detection,
improved communications and expanded on-demand e-services.
The city is already proceeding with a number
of test case projects to begin implementing its Smart Cities vision. This
includes an innovative partnership with Richmond-based MacDonald-Dettwiler and
Associates and other partners to identify risk of flooding, seismic events and
toxic spills on the Fraser River.
Implementing Richmond’s Smart Citieswork program will
occur over the next five years. The deadline
for responses of
interest is March 28.
Winners of the national Smart Cities Challenge will be
announced May 14.
