Kwantlen St. market opening April 16

Ever-expanding, with fresh new ideas, the
Kwantlen St. Farmers Market returns to Minoru Plaza for a third season April
16.
The market will be located outside the main
Brighouse branch of Richmond Public Library (7700 Minoru Gate), every Tuesday
from noon to 4 p.m. until Oct. 8 featuring freshly-grown student-grown produce
from Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Sustainable Agriculture Program. Artisan
baked goods, honey, chemical-free bath and body products, handmade jewelry,
gifts and crafts, and SPCA-certified, organically-fed chicken and eggs will
also be available. Many of the booths are also expected to offer
locally-harvested farm products as the season advances.
Opening day will be special.
At 1 p.m., market shoppers will be served
Sweet Thea’s Divine Vanilla Bean Mango Cake, while Barry Wilson performs live
in the main stage tent.
“We’re thrilled to be supporting the Kwantlen
St. Farmers Market in Richmond for another year,” said David Piraquive,
president of the Kwantlen Student Association. “It’s a great opportunity for
KPU students to connect with the community and support local agriculture.”
This year, the market is looking to expand
children’s programming, while updating the junior and tot foodie passport
program. Organizers also hope to bring in more chefs to demonstrate cooking
techniques.

All products at the market must be made,
baked or grown locally. Organizers are currently looking for local vendors to
offer gourmet items such as chocolate, jams, healthy snack foods and spice
mixes.
“The great thing about items like these is
that they can be prepared in a home kitchen,” says market manager Anne Janzen. “We
have a wonderful vendor start-up toolkit to help answer all the question a new
potential vendor may have.”
The City of Richmond is helping support the
market, by providing the centrally-located venue and free parking in support of
agriculture and small business.
