B.C. reports 269 new COVID-19 cases, one death

B.C. health officials reported 269 new cases of COVID-19 today. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 354,603 cases.

Of the new cases, 51 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 49 in the Fraser Health region, 53 in the Island Health region, 73 in the Interior Health region, 43 in the Northern Health region, and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 258 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 and 49 are in intensive care.

To date, 11,458,133 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,341,506 of those are second doses and 2,648,785 are third doses. 

This means that 93.8 per cent of adults, 93.4 per cent of people aged 12 and older, and 90.8 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 91.4 per cent of adults, 91.0 per cent of those aged 12 and older, and 87.1 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses; 58.9 per cent of adults and 57.1 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.

Sadly, there was one new COVID-related death reported today, bringing that total to 2,975. The person lived in the Northern Health region.

Active outbreaks continue at four long-term care facilities and one acute care facility.

Starting today, all British Columbians aged 18-plus can access rapid antigen test kits through community pharmacies. Eligible individuals can pick up one kit of five tests every 28 days from participating pharmacies at no cost. 

From March 15 to 21, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 16.0 per cent of cases.
From March 8 to 21, they accounted for 26.3 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Partially vaccinated: 24 (1.7 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 1,189 (84.0 per cent)

Past two weeks cases hospitalized (March 8 to 21)—Total 369

• Not vaccinated: 84 (22.8 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 13 (3.5 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 272 (73.7 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (March 15 to 21)

• Not vaccinated: 60.4

• Partially vaccinated: 18.2

• Fully vaccinated: 25.5

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (March 8 to 21)

• Not vaccinated: 23.8

• Partially vaccinated: 11.7

• Fully vaccinated: 5.8
