B.C. reports 698 new COVID-19 cases

B.C. health authorities reported 698 new cases of COVID-19 today, five of which are epidemiologically linked. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 161,969 cases.

Of the new cases, 129 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 203 in the Fraser Health region, 69 in the Island Health region, 252 in the Interior Health region, 45 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 5,356 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 139 of those people are hospitalized, 75 of whom are in intensive care. 

To date, 7,369,741 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,493,119 of those are second doses. 

This means that 84.2 per cent of adults and 83.5 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 76.5 per cent of adults and 75.4 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.

Sadly, there was one new virus-related death reported today, bringing that total to 1,802.

Health authorities reported two new healthcare facility outbreaks. Active outbreaks continue at eight long-term care facilities, five assisted or independent living facilities and one acute care facility.

From Aug. 10 to 23, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 83.3 per cent of cases and 85.0 per cent of hospitalizations.

Cases (Aug. 23):

• Unvaccinated: 372 (68.4 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 53 (9.7 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 119 (21.9 per cent)

Cases (Aug. 17 to 23):

• Unvaccinated: 3,051 (66.8 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 535 (16.5 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 752 (16.6 per cent)

Hospitalizations (Aug. 10 to 23):

• Unvaccinated: 144 (77.0 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 15 (8.0 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 28 (15.0 per cent)
