There are 99 people in hospital with an active case of COVID-19 in B.C. today. This is the first time the number has dropped below 100 in nearly eight months.

Hospitalizations related to active cases peaked at 515 on April 28. Of the 99 people in hospital today, 30 are in intensive care. There are currently 729 active cases in the province.

B.C. health authorities reported 84 new cases of COVID-19 in the last two days—49 from Wednesday to Thursday and a further 35 in the last 24 hours. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 147,705 cases.

Of the new cases, 21 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 36 in the Fraser Health region, 25 in the Interior Health region and two in the Northern Health region. There are no new cases in the Island Health region.

To date, 5,124,693 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 1,526,711 of those are second doses.

This means that 78.7 per cent of all adults in B.C. and 77.5 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 35.2 per cent of adults and 32.9 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received their second dose.

Sadly, there were two new virus-related deaths reported, bringing that total to 1,756.

Health authorities reported one new healthcare facility outbreak and declared one over. There are now active outbreaks at four long-term care, assisted living and independent living facilities—including Richmond’s Minoru Residence—and three acute care facilities.
