Immunization is preventing about seven out of 10 COVID-19 infections across B.C., provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said today.
So far, the province is not seeing waning of protection from vaccines, Henry added. And the “breakthrough” rate—people who are infected after having been vaccinated—is about two per cent. The risk of COVID-19 is “dramatically lower” in those who are immunized, said Henry.
While Henry acknowledged there are likely to be some cases, clusters and transmissions as people increase their social contacts, she said it’s not likely there will be rapid spread in the community like there was earlier this year.
“For most people who are infected, they are not passing this virus on to anybody else. That’s how the pandemic will fizzle out over time, as long as we continue to not have infectious contacts,” said Henry.
She also reported 145 new cases of COVID-19 since Friday—57 cases from Friday to Saturday, 50 from Saturday to Sunday and 38 in the last 24 hours. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 147,549 cases. The cumulative number of cases has been adjusted to reflect a correction.
Of the new cases, 48 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 68 in the Fraser Health region, one in the Island Health region, 26 in the Interior Health region. There were no new cases in the Northern Health region.
There are 930 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 107 of those people are hospitalized, 37 of whom are in intensive care.
To date, 4,886,709 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 1,320,194 of those are second doses.
This means that 78.1 per cent of all adults in B.C. and 76.8 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 30.5 per cent of adults and 28.5 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received their second dose.
Henry said 95 per cent of scheduled vaccinations were completed on the weekend despite the fact that some clinics had to postpone appointments due to the heat.
Sadly, there were five new virus-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 1,754. One of the people who died was in their 20s, one in their 60s and three in their 70s.
Health authorities reported one new healthcare facility outbreak. There are now active outbreaks at three long-term care, assisted living and independent living facilities and two acute care facilities.
