B.C.’s COVID-19 related hospitalizations continue to rise

Hospitalizations and critical care admissions related to COVID-19 continue to rise in B.C., with 286 people reported hospitalized today, 85 of whom are in intensive care.
These figures are the highest since Feb. 2 and Dec. 18, respectively. There were also 622 new cases announced today, just the third time in the last month that the figure has been above 600. B.C.’s cumulative case count is now at 90,049.
Of the new cases, 184 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 317 in the Fraser Health region, 35 in the Island Health region, 30 in the Interior Health region, 54 in the Northern Health region and two new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.
There are 4,941 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and a further 9,620 people are under active public health monitoring.
Health authorities reported 136 new confirmed cases that are variants of concern, bringing B.C.’s total to 1,132 cases. Of those, 143 cases are currently active. Of the total cases, 1,040 are the B.1.1.7 (U.K.) variant, 41 are the B.1.351 (South Africa) variant and 51 are the P.1 (Brazil) variant.
To date, 465,584 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca-SII COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C., 87,120 of which are second doses.
Sadly, there were eight new virus-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 1,419. Today’s deaths mark the highest single-day number since March 1.
There have been no new healthcare facility outbreaks, and one was declared over. Outbreaks continue at six long-term care, assisted living and independent living facilities and eight acute care facilities.
