This fall, one of Grauer Elementary’s Grade 3 classes was inspired through literacy to help those less fortunate.
The Division 4 class, taught by Ms. Bawa, read “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl. In the book, Charlie Bucket and his family are very poor. As a class, they talked about how there are families like Charlie Bucket’s here in Richmond and decided to do something special for children like Charlie.
This is where the idea for Family Fun Boxes first came to light.
Continuing to reading the book, the students realized that though poor, Charlie is happy. This is because he is close to his family. Even when he eventually wins the entire chocolate factory, he wants to take his family with him.
The class brainstormed what activities they wanted to do for families, and came up with a list of things to include inside the Family Fun Boxes. Each box included a board game, a deck of cards, a hot beverage (coffee/ hot chocolate), a jenga, a word search book, a paint set, popcorn, and chocolates, as well as a card for the families.
The purpose of making the Family Fun Boxes was for families to be able to play and spend time together during the holidays.
In the past, the Rotaract Club of Richmond always volunteered with the Salvation Army during their Christmas Dinner when families were able to receive gifts from Santa. As a result, partnering with the Salvation Army to help connect the Family Fun Boxes to families in need made a lot of sense.
The students were excited and happy to put together their Family Fun Boxes. In the end, 12 boxes were donated with the help of the Richmond Sunset Rotary Club.
