First Nations Veterans Honoured

Published 3:04 PST, Thu November 30, 2017
From a small, personal observance, Aboriginal
Veterans Day has come to be a community event with all, First Nations and
settlers alike, welcomed as they showed respect for the veterans. Various First
Nations from across Metro Vancouver, BC, and North America were represented
including the Musqueam Nation upon whose traditional land Richmond sits.
The November 8 observances came about because
Aboriginal veterans wanted their own day to be with their families and
communities to commemorate Aboriginal service to the country in the Aboriginal
way, but they also wanted to be able to spend Nov. 11 with their comrades on
Remembrance Day.
This year’s ceremonies featured the laying of
wreaths at the base of the cenotaph as well as traditional drumming and songs
followed by a lunch, dancing, drumming and speeches of gratitude at the
Aboriginal Friendship Centre.
