The Richmond Kajaks have added yet another
honour to their 2017 achievements.
Demonstrating a high level of consistency,
athletes from the local track and field club combined to win the 2017 Lower
Mainland cross-country championship by earning a team-high 701 points at the
conclusion of the eight-race series.
Competing among nearly 3,000 participants,
representing clubs from throughout the region, the Kajaks sprinted to the
finish line at the final event, the Gunner Shaw Memorial at Vancouver’s Jericho
Park.
“We trailed the whole way until the final,”
said a jubilant Fred Pawluk, who was the top finisher among men 70-plus in each
of the eight races, beginning with his victory (good for 30 points) at the
inaugural race, the Pinetree Classic at Coquitlam’s Moody Park in
mid-September.
The Kajaks placed second to Lions Gate in
2016.
