When Joan Tweedlie was diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment in 2012, it didn’t change the way her husband, George, thought about their relationship.

“I hope my family sees our marriage as a guideline to happiness,” George says. “Our lives have been filled with luck and love.”

The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s, presented by Go Auto, is the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s biggest fundraising event. The event will see participants in 19 communities across British Columbia walk together on Sunday, May 25 to honour and remember people affected by dementia. Funds raised through the Walk are instrumental in helping the Alzheimer Society of B.C. deliver vital programs and services. Funds will also enable critical research to change the future of the disease.

Each Walk for Alzheimer’s event is dedicated to an honouree—an individual or group affected by dementia, or someone who has valuably contributed to the lives of people living with the disease. This year, George Tweedlie is being honoured at the Walk in Richmond for his contribution to the community and his commitment to helping people affected by dementia.

“I noticed at least two years before her official diagnosis that things were becoming more and more difficult,” George says.

He has found help working through these challenges by participating in one of the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s support groups for caregivers.

“Some of the topics make me look a little deeper into the way I feel,” he says. “Before, I wouldn’t have considered myself a caring, compassionate person, but I think this journey has changed me.”

“Caregivers deserve to have access to meaningful dementia support that meets their needs, which is why Go Auto is so thrilled to be continuing as provincial presenting sponsor for the Walk,” says Michael Hladun, Senior Vice President for Go Auto. “It’s incredibly important for people across the province to understand the impact that dementia has on their communities—but also, how they can help.”

The Walk is an opportunity for communities to support British Columbians living with dementia and the people who care for them. If you are unable to participate in one of our official in-person Walk events, but would still like to be involved, please consider:

    • Walk Your Way—Show your support by walking in your own unique way, wherever and whenever it's convenient for you, any day during the month of May.
