Easton Elmer has made an auspicious debut with the Richmond Sockeyes.

In his—and the team’s—first game of the season, the 17-year-old rookie forward from Delta scored twice and assisted on a third goal in a 5-3 Pacific Junior Hockey League win over the visiting White Rock Whalers on Thursday night at Minoru Arenas.

Richmond, which dropped a pair of exhibition games to the Whalers last month, also got goals from captain Noah Kelly, Marcus Pantazis and rookie Gabriel Parent (an empty-netter with 21 seconds to go in regulation). Goaltender Mauricio Soriano-McKinnon stopped 17 of 20 shots to earn the victory, while his White Rock counterpart Jonathan Holloway stopped 31 of 35 shots.

The game was fast paced, but with several giveaways and undisciplined penalties.

Richmond looks to go 2-0 Saturday when they face the Outlaws in Mission. They’re slated to play again Wednesday at the Langley Trappers before returning home to host Ridge Meadows Flames Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at Minoru Arenas.
