The Steveston Dragon Boat Festival Aug. 24 is among the highlights of What’s Happening in Richmond over the next two weeks.


E.T. is back

It’s the return of E.T. The lovable extra-terrestrial is back on the big screen for the 20th anniversary celebration of the cinematic classic Aug. 14 at City Centre’s annual Outdoor Movie Night at Garden City Park, 6620 Garden City Rd. The fun begins at 6:30 p.m. with an evening of live music, games and activities, followed by a special outdoor screening of E.T. at sundown starting at 9 p.m.

Church summer sale

The Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church, 5771 Granville Ave., will hold its annual summer sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. You’ll find a variety of clothing, accessories, jewelry, household items, plants, toys and more. Foot massage therapy, a hand car wash and a kids’ kung fu performance will also be featured, along with a juice bar and food for all.

Summer Fun Night

Cambie Community Centre is hosting its annual Summer Fun Night family event at King George Park, 4100 No. 5 Rd., Aug. 14 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The fun night includes games, community booths and music as well as storytelling with Angela Brown and the Nylon Zoo. Walk Richmond

Walk Richmond invites you to enjoy a trek along the South Arm of the Fraser River from 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 15. This dog-friendly walk begins at the park lot across from London Heritage Farm House, 6511 Dyke Rd., then follows a picturesque route toward the sport fishing pier while overlooking the river, Ladner and Mount Baker.

Dragon Boat Festival

The annual Steveston Dragon Boat Festival returns Aug. 24 with a full day of fun and racing. Wrapping up summer on the shores of the Fraser River, this always-popular event is an all-day celebration of fun, entertainment and paddling starting promptly at 8 a.m. Paddling is between Britannia Heritage Shipyard and Imperial Landing. Carpooling is suggested as there is very limited parking available at Homma Elementary School, 5180 Westwater Dr. for which a suggested donation of $5 is requested with proceeds to Richmond Food Bank.

Swap Meet and Upcycle Market

Here’s your chance to shop or swap general goods at a unique community market from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Thompson Community Centre, 5151 Granville Ave. This year, the centre has partnered with the City of Richmond’s environmental programs to showcase interactive activities and presentations about reducing, reusing and recycling. Monday Fun Day

Happening each Monday through Aug. 26, Thompson Community Centre, 5151 Granville Ave., is hosting a free event for pre-schoolers aged five and under. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. there will be fun activities and games for the pre-schoolers and their families to enjoy. Parent participation is required.


Program Leader Training

For those interested in becoming a volunteer program leader, Chronic Conditions Leader Training will be held at Minoru Centre for Active Living, 7191 Granville Ave., Aug. 22, 23, 28 and 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Volunteers with Self-Management BC can be peer leaders delivering the six-session group program and/or health coach for the Self-Management Health Coach Program.


Yoga in the Park

Aug. 15 will be the final opportunity this summer to unwind with Yoga in the Park. All levels are welcome for the session at Thompson Community Centre, 5151 Granville Ave., from 8:10 to 9 p.m.

Zumba in the Park

Don’t miss your last chance of the season to enjoy this unique exercise session Thursday, Aug. 22 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Minoru Centre for Active Living, 7191 Granville Ave. Move to the zesty international and Latin music in this outdoor setting led by a dynamic Zumba instructor. Meet at the northeast plaza.
